The All Cat Club

Story synopsis:  A lonely cat builds a club to find some cat friends, only to have it “invaded” by a variety of animals.  The story teaches five letters of the alphabet (c, a, t, s, m) and also teaches the concepts of tolerance, patience and the fruits of hard work.

Letters taught:  c, a, t, s, m

Words taught:  cat, sat, mat.

 

Nat’s Nine Noses

Story synopsis:  Nat the Cat takes his nine noses for a walk and gets a birthday surprise. The story teaches the letter ‘n’ and the difference between the letter ‘n’ and the letter ‘m.’

Letters taught:  n, n versus m

Words taught:  nat, mat, cat, can, sat, am

 

Mac The Mouse

Story synopsis:  Mac the Mouse tries to rescue his sister by being “nice” to the cat.  The story practices (1) the letter ‘m’ and (2) recognizing a change in the LAST letter of a word, which changes the whole meaning of the word (for example: mac, man, mat).

Letters taught:  No new letters.

“Easier” version:  Focuses on the words mac, man, mat (no other words are highlighted).  Recommended for very young children and children who are struggling to read.

Regular version:  Words taught:  mac, man, mat, cat, sat, at, am can.

 

Dan The Dancing Deer

Story synopsis:  Dan The Dancing Deer gets into a “fix” when he tries to fix his broken radio. The story introduces the letter ‘d.’

Letters taught:  Letter ‘d’

“Easier” version:  Focuses on just two words – “dan” and “cat.”  Recommended for very young children and children who are struggling to read.

Regular version:  Words taught:  dan, can, man, cat, sat, am.

Sam The Seal

Story synopsis:  Sam The Seal overcomes his fear of swimming when he encounters “endless elephants.”  This story practices the letter ‘s.’

Letters taught:  Letter ‘s’ (revisited for practice)

“Easier” version:  Focuses on just two words – “sam” and “am.”  Recommended for very young children and children who are struggling to read.

Regular version:  Words taught:  sam, am, sat, dad, can.

 

Han The Hippo

Story synopsis:  Han the Hippo learns self-acceptance after losing his hat.  This story introduces the letter ‘h.’

Letters taught:  Letter ‘h’

“Easier” version:  None.  (Only three words are “big red words” in this book.)

Regular version:  Words taught:  hat, han, am.

 

Ed and Ted

Story synopsis:  Hot-tempered Ted loses his fancy, schmancy pants when he tries to stop Dan the Deer from dancing. This story introduces the letter ‘e.’  (Short Vowel e)

Letters taught:  Letter ‘e’

“Easier” version:  Only has the words ‘ed’ and ‘ted.’

Regular version:  Words taught:  ed, ted, dan, at, cat.

 

Len The Lion

Story synopsis:  Len goes hunting for a “prize” to fill an empty spot on his trophy wall. Introduces the letter “L” and practices recognition of vowel changes in the middle of a word.

Letters taught:  Lowercase Letter ‘L’

“Easier” version:  Only has the words “len” and “lan”  (Len is a boy’s name. Lan is a girl’s name.)

Regular version:  Words taught:  len, lan, hat, at, am.

 

Al and Hal

Story synopsis:  Al the sheep learns to change his messy ways.  Practices the letter “L” at the end of words.

Letters taught:  Lowercase Letter ‘L’ at the end of words.

“Easier” version:  Only has the words “al” and “hal”  (both are boy’s names).

Regular version:  Words taught:  al, at, sat. hal, can.

 

Len And The Men

Story synopsis:  Len fights imaginary men in the bathroom.

Letters taught:  Practices lowercase letter “e” and introduces the concept of plurals, especially “men” vs “man.”

“Easier” version:  Only highlights the words “len,” “men” and “man.”

Regular version:  Words taught:  len, men, man, at, am, can, dad, mat, sat.

 

Ben’s Bed

Story synopsis:  Ben’s bed saves Ben from the silly “Ella” elephants.

Letters taught:  Practices the difference between ‘b’ and ‘d.’

“Easier” version:  Not applicable (only three words in the book).

Regular version:  Words taught:  ben, bed, dad.
