Skills Required for a Child to Learn to Read:
- Visual Perception (Recognizing the differences between letters.)
- Auditory Perception (Hearing the differences between sounds.)
- Visual Memory (Remembering what has been seen.)
- Auditory Memory (Remembering what has been heard.)
- Visual and Auditory Integration (Combining what is seen and heard.)
Using a phonics-based approach, we can teach children to read effectively. This method focuses on teaching the relationships between sounds and letters through sound recognition.
Key Elements in the Phonics-Based Approach:
- Sounds and Letters:
- Start with the basic units of sound, the phonemes. Introduce each sound through associations, e.g., “Bb is for bear, ball, tree, bush.”
- Emphasize auditory recognition of sounds alongside visual recognition.
- Letter Formation:
- Teach correct letter formation through activities such as writing in sand, building letters with clay, or creating rainbow letters.
- These activities help develop motor skills while teaching the shapes of letters.
- Focus on proper letter formation, such as where to begin writing the letter.
- Sound Segmentation:
- Practice breaking down and blending three-letter words, e.g., b-a-t = bat.
- Focus on sound families, e.g., c-at, b-at, r-at, etc.
- Word Recognition:
- The learner “sounds out” simple three-letter words aloud, e.g., c-a-t = cat.
- Use only phonemes that have already been introduced, and avoid overwhelming the learner.
- Build this process step by step to foster confidence and strengthen reading skills.
The key is to create an environment of discovery and active participation. By using repetition and various activities, children can understand the relationship between sounds and letters and begin learning to read effectively.
