Grade 3 Coding & Robotics Lesson Planning Term 3

My Klaskamer’s Grade 3 Coding & Robotics Term 3 package builds on the concepts introduced in Term 2 and guides learners further into data, patterns, robot code, modularity, obstacles, debugging, robot systems and nested loops.

The package is CAPS-aligned, practical for the Foundation Phase and easy for teachers to use directly in the classroom.

From data to robot code: Learners discover that patterns can be used as data. They use data keys to interpret symbols and patterns, translate them into robot code and carry out the instructions on a grid.

They continue to apply the important Grade 3 rule: Turn = Look / Step = Move

They also use the following symbols: 👣 move forward / ▶️ turn right / ◀️ turn left

Problem-solving and debugging:

Term 3 strengthens logical thinking by giving learners opportunities to work with:

• robot status: position + direction
• safe routes with obstacles
• If–Then decisions
• modularity: breaking a large task into smaller parts
• the Trace Method to identify and correct errors

Learners are taught to test routes, notice errors, change one element at a time and test again.

Robot systems and design:

The term also introduces simple robot systems: Sensor → Control → Output → Feedback

Learners design and test a simple robotic hand or gripper, then use feedback to improve their design.

Learning by doing – The lessons follow My Klaskamer’s familiar learning pathway:

Body → Floor grid → Paper

Learners first carry out the movements themselves, then test them on a floor grid and finally complete structured worksheets.
