TERM 2 LESSON PLANS (100% CAPS-ALIGNED)
My Klaskamer’s Grade R Coding & Robotics lesson plans for Term 2 build on the foundation laid in Term 1 and take learners one step further in their understanding of computational thinking — still in a playful and developmentally appropriate way.
This package is specifically designed for Grade R learners and focuses on applying simple plans, routes, and problem-solving, while reinforcing and revisiting core concepts.
What do learners learn in Term 2?
Learners develop a deeper understanding of:
• What is a robot? (a machine helper)
• Following and creating simple arrow plans
• Moving along a route with obstacles (maze logic)
• Breaking tasks into parts and focusing on what is important
• Recognising and completing AB patterns
• Devices and how they work (buttons and screens)
• Stop – Ask – Tell (digital safety)
• Debugging — fixing a mistake in a plan
Everything remains concrete and practical — with a strong focus on doing, seeing, and experiencing.
How do the lessons work?
Each lesson follows a fixed, simple structure:
• Clear lesson aim and learning outcomes
• CAPS competencies
Practical lesson flow in three phases:
Body coding (move and experience)
Floor / concrete activities
Paper activities
Closure and reflection
Learners continue to work according to the “do-first” principle:
Body → Concrete → Paper
What makes Term 2 different?
• Greater focus on routes and problem-solving
• Learners begin to create and test their own plans
• Introduction to debugging (fixing errors)
• Stronger integration between coding, robotics, and safety
• Reinforcement through more purposeful application
